This weekend, the German carnival is in full swing, but the highlight of the festivities is still ahead of us: Rose Monday with its traditional street parades on February 20, 2012. Marching bands, dancers, and floats parade down the streets, throwing confetti, sweets, flowers, and toys. The elaborate floats often show caricatured figures mocking German as well as international politicians and other personalities.
One of the most famous Rose Monday Parade takes place in Cologne: Starting at 10:30 a.m. at Clodwigplatz, over 10.000 participants and 100 floats make their way through Cologne’s city center. One million dressed-up Germans are flocking the Cologne streets every year to see this spectacle, and even more are watching the live broadcast on German TV.
If you are visiting Cologne for Carnival, the 4-hour long Rose Monday Parade is a must-see – and on this day, there is not much else going on in the city anyways. It is all about carnival, and most museums and attractions are closed. Come early if you want to have a good spot, but keep in mind that the first row is reserved for children.
